Job Description

Our growing and named Downtown law firm is seeking a Controller for their Houston office. The position includes overseeing accounting functions, facilities management, HR, payroll and other projects assigned by the firm partners. 

FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

QuickBooks Premier Accountant 

Excel Intermediate, at least able to use Data Sort and Data Subtotal, pull totals from one tab to another using formula

Logical / Critical Thinking ability

Detail oriented

Self Motivated

Able to handle tight deadlines

Able to prioritize workload by statutory, internal and client driven deadlines

Direct client contact/involvement

Payroll Preparation:

Understands IRS Circular E (Employer's Tax Guide)

Able to calculate a net payroll check manually from Circular E tables

Knows FUTA/SUTA limits

Knows SS/MC limits

Manual preparation of quarterly and annual payroll reports (Excel for supports and totals, IRS fill-in or online software for form completion)

1099 Analysis and preparation

Understands IRS rules for entities and payment types which must be reported

Understands need to cross check client financials (P&L) against QB 1099 report to ensure all required payment types/vendors are marked for 1099 printing

Accounts Payable

Understands difference in QB between writing checks versus enter and pay bills

Good judgment for selecting bills to pay and noticing when a regular bill has not been received (like credit card statements or utility bills)

Research of balance forward amounts

Willing to investigate why an expected bill has not arrived for processing

Experience in recording client after-the-fact activity to produce financial statements

Account Reconciliation

Understands use of QB bank reconciliation feature (cash, credit cards, other balance sheet accounts)

Can identify and resolve discrepancies

General Ledger/Financial Statement Preparation

Understands need for consistency from month to month unless a specific cause exists (unusual expenses, refunds, etc)

Attention to formatting detail when preparing reports in Excel (consistent use of number formats, bolded items, underline styles, etc.)
