SUMMARY:

The Senior Systems Engineer needs to be a seasoned expert in business IT solutions. Being able to research industry standard architectures and platforms in order to deliver a quality platform that is designed to meet the business needs.

Collaborating with development and project teams in order to coordinate underlying infrastructure requirements with application deployment will be a common occurrence. This role will also focus heavily on implementation of new systems and applications platforms, either on-premises or in public cloud environments, as well as analyzing, planning, and implementing optimization or expansion of current systems. A propensity for automating solutions to business problems in a dependable and re-usable fashion is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Systems/Applications Platform research, design, and implementation, including but not limited to server platforms, software-defined networking platforms, and software deployment platforms
  • Automating systems provisioning and deployment with a focus and end-goal centered on enabling business groups to provision workloads on a self-service basis with appropriate approval levels using scripts and job creations
  • Automation of maintenance, operations, and capacity provisioning tasks, with a focus around self-service for business groups outside of infrastructure departments
  • Automating the configuration of Backup & Restore procedures, in order to speed up Disaster Recovery
  • Automating the provisioning of network configurations and security (where applicable) with new workloads, with a roadmap leading to self-service capability
  • Monitor network performance (availability, utilization, throughput, and latency) and test for weaknesses, and plan for optimization and/or expansion of current systems
  • Design comprehensive and dependable solutions to problems affecting the entire business (or significant portions of it)
  • Research and make recommendations on network administration
  • Be a technical authority for Development and Infrastructure teams, and provide informed and researched insight on deployment of new applications and infrastructure systems
  • Documenting current and newly implemented systems or systems platforms with a focus on empowering service desk technicians, network admins, and/or developers to own, manage, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the system or platform going forward

Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years experience in a system administrator/engineer role
  • Experience with automation tools and configurations such as VMware with vRealize Automation, vShphere  5.0 and higher
  • Strong experience with Windows OS architecture
  • Proficient working in Azure and/or AWS public cloud environments on an enterprise level, while understanding best practices and security methods
  • Understanding of networking, routing, switching, firewalling principles
  • Excellent knowledge of best practices around management, control, and monitoring of network applications systems and platforms infrastructure
  • Proven experience in identifying failure and fault domains in one or a group of systems, and planning and implementing solutions to mitigate risk and ensure system and platform availability to the business and external customers and clients
  • Strong experience with, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in order to recover services
  • Ability to set up and configure server, networking, automation hardware and software
  • Proficiency with PowerShell scripting language, both in implementing solutions or configurations in new or existing systems as well as analyzing existing systems and culling data from them, with an emphasis on idempotent, error-catching, modular code that can be reused in future code-based solutions
  • Develop and Establish relevant metrics (KPI/SLA) to drive results within the business. This should include technical metrics, business process metrics and overall support metrics
  • Experience with change/version control
  • Develop, refine, and document policies, processes and procedures. In addition, the role will need to continuously cross-train using Visio & Office products
  • Ability to initialize and operate public cloud infrastructure, and plan and build automation tools around and for those platforms
  • Familiarity with backup, recovery, and site reliability solutions and methodologies
  • Great at organizing, prioritizing and multitasking
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, in effectively conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
